A Portrait Mansion
A New York City Landmark, this early 1900s townhouse, designed by William Tuthill, holds treasures of design by William Comfort Tiffany and Lockwood DeForest. An early project for the firm, the team assembled were trusted colleagues from projects past. This work was a privilege and a challenge, the owners’ true heroes of preservation. The collaboration is a gift; affirmation that architecture is not a solitary venture.

Taking cues from an original gate long since removed, the new gate is a cast bronze composition including a house number plaque flanked by lion-headed seraphim. The inner door was also an interpretation of what could have existed originally but with the advantage of having the original arched transom. One of the many fascinating discoveries in this house was the colored, enamel coating on the existing bronze festoons in this transom. Cast iron, half-round floor grilles were created to sit within an existing stone floor and integrate the Mr and Mrs Original Owner’s monogram.
The Library, with intricate carvings and mosaics, was mostly preserved in its original condition. It is an undocumented design by Lockwood de Forest, a known collaborator with Louis Comfort Tiffany. The major design addition was a newly conceived plaster ceiling and an inlaid wood floor border as neither was intact. The approach to the design of each was to create intricate detail that tied very closely to the design intent of the original room.
